This is not a subtle blog post. Nor is it about literature. Or my kids. Or publishing. It’s about a basic right that people all over the world fight for, are tortured for, are willing to die for. It’s a right that, in this country, over half the population DOESN’T BOTHER TO DO.

I am the first to admit that our politics are seriously far from perfect. That there are often no great choices, but simply the least problematic choice. But. But that doesn’t give any of us the excuse to check out. President Obama, who I believe has done almost as many good things as he has been blamed for bad, delivered one of my favorite quotes of all time:

“We’ve been warned against offering the people of this nation false hope. But in the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope. “

It is easy to be cynical. To look at unemployment rates, 401k numbers, violence at Occupy Oakland events, and just want to check out. But don’t.
