Books Make Great Gifts!
Hey pals! It is that time of year again (well, it’s actually already past that time of year for fellow Chanukah-celebrators…but I’m running a bit late!). But for those who are still doing their holiday shopping, can I humbly suggest that BOOKS BOOKS BOOKS BOOKS!!!! make the best gifts around?
Of course I’d love it if you give MY books, and I do have a new one — IT WASN’T ME — that just came out a few weeks ago! I’m happy to send personalized signed bookplates, bookmarks, and other goodies to make it special! There are buying links for each of my books on the Books page or you can simply request them at your local store.
HOWEVER. There are hundreds of other wonderful books that also make good gifts, and if you’re looking for personal recommendations, I am so here for you! Tell me who you’re buying for, what they’ve read and loved (or movies they love, or interests), and I’ll rack my brain for excellent suggestions. So hit me up in the comments, or email me at dana @ danaalisonlevy . com (you have to put it all together, but I’d prefer not to get 500 spam emails from Russia today, so…) Anyway, reach out and I’ll give personalized recommendations of books for everyone on your list.
And if you’re wondering where to donate some money at the end of this tumultuous year, I suggest We Need Diverse Books, an organization dedicated to helping diversify children’s literature, so that all kids can find themselves in our stories, and First Book, which works to get books into the hands of families and kids who cannot afford them. Two amazing organizations where your tax-deductible gifts can make a real difference.
So in short: give books, read books, donate books, and enjoy books this holiday season. Cheers!
Dana
This question came over on Goodreads, but I figure I’ll share the wisdom here!
Callie wrote: “Hi Dana! Wondering if you have any suggestions of good graphic novels for 8-10 year old boys?”
There are so many fantastic graphic novels these days! If he’s already a big GN fan he’s probably already read the AMULET series, the BONE series, Raina Telgemier’s books (DRAMA, GHOST, etc.,) and so on, but if not check them out! Then there are gorgeous retellings of famous stories like THE ODYSSEY and BEOWULF by Gareth Hinds. And of course fantastic GN adaptations of THE LIGHTNING THIEF and other Rick Riordan favorites. Both my kids loved NIMONA by Noelle Stevenson, and EL DEAFO by Ceci Bell. AMERICAN BORN CHINESE by Gene Luen Yang is also amazing.
And finally, I recently saw this list and saved it…might have some other good suggestions! https://bookriot.com/2018/04/18/must-read-middle-grade-graphic-novels/
